What We Do

A democracy runs better when its people understand it, can talk about it honestly, and keep power in check. That's the whole operation, broken into three parts.
Who We Are
A founding statement, not a party line.
Sentinel USA exists because the loudest voices in American politics have made it feel impossible to be politically engaged without picking a tribe. We reject that premise. This organization is built for the people who care deeply about the country, who want to participate and hold power accountable, and who refuse to be sorted into a side to do it.
We exist to bring Americans together around what we have in common instead of what divides us, starting with real knowledge of how our government works and the responsibility to be active in it. We believe free speech and open dialogue are what keep extremism from taking root, which is why we create space for real disagreement instead of shutting it down. And we believe power only stays honest when it's watched, so we hold every official accountable, regardless of party.
Sentinel USA is built to outlast any one person involved in starting it.

Together they cover the full cycle of civic life: understanding the system, being able to talk about it honestly, and making sure the people running it answer for their actions.
Civic Competence & Duty
"Know it. Show up for it."
Belief
We believe a democracy works better when its citizens actually understand how their government works and feel a real sense of duty to take part in it. Competence and duty aren't separate things, they build on each other: understanding the system is what makes people want to show up for it, and showing up is what keeps the system honest.
In Practice
That belief is why we teach the real mechanics behind how a bill becomes law, how city councils and school boards operate, and how to actually get involved instead of just complaining from the sidelines. It's also why we run voter registration drives, recruit poll workers, and help people find real pathways into campaign or government work.
Free Speech & Open Dialogue
"Disagree without disappearing."
Belief
We believe free speech and open, honest dialogue are essential to a healthy democracy. Division doesn't grow because people disagree, it grows because people stop talking to each other. When that kind of open disagreement disappears, it's exactly what allows extremism to take root on both sides.
In Practice
That belief is why we built the Sentinel Sitdown: real, moderated conversations between people who actually disagree, proving Americans can still hear each other out without hating each other.
Government Accountability
"Power answers to us, all of it, every time."
Belief
We believe power has to be checked. A government that isn't watched stops working for the people it's supposed to serve, no matter which party is in charge. Accountability only means something if it applies equally to everyone in power, which is why this belief is nonpartisan by design.
In Practice
That belief is why we publish how elected officials actually voted on major bills, side by side, with no grades and no spin, and teach people how to read campaign finance filings themselves. We give you the facts and the tools to look into it yourself. What you do with that information is up to you.

The Sentinel Sitdown
Picture a whiteboard set up in a public place. Someone writes down an opinion they actually believe, something real, not a joke. A stranger walks by, reads it, and disagrees. Instead of scrolling past or arguing in the comments, they sit down, face to face, and actually talk about it. Out loud. On camera.
That's the Sentinel Sitdown.
One of our members sits in as the moderator, keeping the conversation fair and on track without ever taking a side. Both people get real, equal time to actually be heard, not just wait for their turn to talk. When it's over, they shake hands. Not because they suddenly agree, but because they just proved something most of the internet has forgotten how to do: two people who see things differently can still sit down, talk like adults, and walk away having actually listened.
No winners. No losers. No one gets dunked on. Just two people who disagreed and handled it like human beings.
How it works
- Someone writes an opinion they actually believe on a whiteboard. Someone else who disagrees stops and sits down across from them.
- Before anything starts, our moderator makes it clear Sentinel USA isn't on anyone's side. They're just there to keep things fair.
- Both people get a minute to introduce themselves, who they are and why they think what they think, then the real conversation starts.
- Then they talk it out, each side getting equal, timed turns to make their case and respond to the other person.
- Before they shake hands, the moderator points out what the two of them actually agreed on, even if it's small.
- Handshake. Done. No winner, no loser, just two people who talked instead of yelled.
The ground rules
- No slurs, no personal attacks, no "gotcha" bait. Just real opinions people actually hold.
- Our moderator never shares their own opinion. Not during, not after, not off camera either.
- Both people get their full, uninterrupted turn to talk. No talking over each other.
- If either person gets hostile or stops engaging honestly, the moderator can end it early.
- Whoever's watching stays watching. Sentinel USA members don't jump in or take sides.
- Real topics only. Actual policy or political opinions, not personal stuff or things meant to just provoke.
Where you'll find it
We're setting up on college campuses and in public spaces, wherever people are already out and about. That's the whole point. It's not a classroom exercise, it's a whiteboard on a sidewalk, a quad, a busy corner, anywhere a stranger might actually stop and read what's written on it.
